In the history of Jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, nearly 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz.

The Count Basie Orchestra has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and major concert hall in the world. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers, and vocalists in jazz history became international stars once they began working with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra.

This great 18 member orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing.

During the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s Suzy Bogguss sold 4 millions records with sparkling radio hits like Outbound Plane, Someday Soon, Letting Go and Drive South. But you can’t peg Suzy that easily. In the midst of her country popularity she took time off to make a duets album with the legendary Chet Atkins. In 2003 she made an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel. An album of original music in 2007 landed her at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots show through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion, in the Grammy she earned for her work on "Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster", and in her critically acclaimed album and book project from 2011, "American Folk Songbook". Her latest effort is "Lucky” a collection of songs written by Merle Haggard and interpreted through Suzy’s crystal vocals from the female point of view. So yes, you can call her a country singer if you want, but really that’s just the beginning.

Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn

Thursday, February 18th, 7:30 PM

Part of our 2015 - 2016 Live Season. Click here for more information.

Individual show tickets on sale Monday, August 17th, 9:00 AM.

Banjoists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn have mastered the deceptively intricate art of the duet. Their performances embrace a diversity almost unthinkable coming from just two banjos and one voice. Washburn’s beguiling composing, playing and singing blend with Fleck’s riveting and virtuosic musicianship to create music both unique yet familiar in texture.

Fleck, a 15-time Grammy winner, has collaborated with Chick Corea, Oumou Sangare, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dave Mathews, Earl Scruggs, and the entire Cleveland Orchestra for his Banjo Concert 'The Impostor'.

Washburn’s banjo has taken her far beyond the usual old-timey comfort zone, musically and geographically. An alumnus of Uncle Earl, the powerhouse all-female stringband, her music resounds with echoes of Appalachia.

Together, Fleck and Washburn employ the relatively rare 3-finger and clawhammer banjo duet to create an explosion of musical white heat. No wonder they are married and have a new baby.
